Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment is designed to clarify how cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and personality-based factors may be affecting daily functioning. These evaluations identify patterns involving attention, executive functioning, memory, learning, emotional regulation, social functioning, trauma-related presentations, neurodevelopmental concerns, and neurocognitive change.
Assessments are used for diagnostic clarification, differential diagnosis, treatment planning, academic or occupational support, and communication with families or treatment teams when the clinical picture is complex or unclear.
Who is a neuropsychological assessment for?
Assessments are available for adolescents, young adults, adults, and older adults. They are especially indicated when someone has longstanding difficulties that have never been fully understood, when symptoms overlap across multiple possible diagnoses, when treatment has stalled, or when more detailed clarification is needed to guide next steps.
Referrals come from individuals, families, psychiatrists, therapists, treatment programs, physicians, schools, attorneys, and multidisciplinary care teams.
What kinds of concerns are commonly assessed?
Common referral questions involve ADHD, autism spectrum presentations, executive functioning difficulties, learning issues, trauma and complex trauma, mood instability, anxiety, obsessive or rigid patterns, emotional dysregulation, personality dynamics, memory concerns, concussion, mild traumatic brain injury, substance-related complications, and cases where several possible explanations may be interacting at once.
How should I prepare for testing?
A good night of sleep and a normal meal before testing are recommended. Prescribed medications should be continued unless otherwise discussed in advance. If relevant medical, psychiatric, academic, or treatment records are available, those can be sent ahead of time for review.
Is testing painful or invasive?
No. Neuropsychological testing is non-invasive. It involves a combination of interview-based questions, questionnaires, and performance-based tasks that assess different areas of functioning. Some tasks may feel easier than others, which is expected and clinically useful. Breaks are provided as needed to support stamina and testing validity.
How long does the process take?
The intake and interview portion is typically completed first, followed by testing. Testing itself often takes approximately four to six hours, though the schedule can be adjusted based on the individual and the complexity of the evaluation.
After testing, a feedback session is typically scheduled once the data have been analyzed. A comprehensive written report is finalized after feedback.
What happens after testing is completed?
All measures are scored and reviewed carefully. Dr. Hai then integrates the test data with the clinical history, behavioral observations, records, and any relevant collateral information. Findings are discussed during a feedback session in clear, practical language, and a written report is completed with conclusions and recommendations.
The report is designed to support treatment planning, communication with providers or systems, academic or occupational accommodations when appropriate, family understanding, and ongoing clinical decision-making.
Will I receive feedback and recommendations?
Yes. Feedback is a central part of the process. The goal is not to generate scores or labels but to provide a meaningful understanding of what the findings suggest and how they can be used. Recommendations are individualized and relevant to the specific referral question.
Are assessments confidential?
Yes. With standard legal and ethical exceptions, assessments and therapy services are confidential. Information is only released with appropriate authorization or when required by law.
Do you take insurance?
Neuro Assessment Center is a private pay practice. A detailed bill can be provided for clients who wish to seek
out-of-network reimbursement through their insurance carrier.
Do you provide therapy as well?
Yes. Selective therapy and consultation services are available when clinically appropriate. The practice is primarily centered on comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, diagnostic clarification, and treatment-facing recommendations for complex or atypical presentations.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. Neuro Assessment Center does not prescribe medication. When medication consultation is indicated, appropriate referrals can be provided.
What is your cancellation policy?
A minimum of 24 hours notice is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Missed appointments or late cancellations may be subject to the full session fee.
